Anyone for a mint?

Today we headed for Fox Glacier....yes Fox's Glacier Mints were named after it, apologies for obscure heading!!!
Staying at Fox Holiday Camp...a bit basic and no ensuite toilet here, we awoke to bright blue skies and lovely sunshine. Even though it was a bit on the chilly side, it was a perfect day to make enquiries about a helicopter flight over the glacier.

We found the best deal at Mountain Helicopters in Fox so were whisked away to the helicopter within minutes. Thankfully I didn't have chance to think about what we were about to do! Now, I was a little troubled when they casually pushed the helicopter out of it's garage( hangar I suppose is the real name!). I was even more troubled, when, as we were sat in this million dollar machine, it failed to start! Luckily Mountain Helicopters had one they had prepared earlier and just wheeled another one out!

So we shifted from the green one to the white one and off we went....
Richard used to teach the pilot many years ago!!! What a small world!

Our trip was only 10 minutes but it was long enough to take us up the valley and to the top of the glacier. The views were amazing. The ice so thick, the crevasses so wide. There had been a new coating of snow overnight which added to the scene.
Not content with flying over it, following our flight, we then walked up to the base of the glacier. We passed a glacial pool on the way which had been created by melting ice. The huge piece of ice had broken away from the main glacier years ago and it was fascinating to actually watch it melt as we stood there.

And so we reached the base of it. Unfortunately it is now fenced off so it isn't possible to touch the ice but it was so imposing standing so close to it. I did bring a stone home though as a souvenir!

Today was a major highlight for the three of us.
