Bye bye Nelson....

We arrived at Nelson airport at 9am to check in for our flight to Christchurch at 10am. Reservations at Air New Zealand had decided in their wisdom that we then had to fly on to Auckland in the afternoon before linking up with our International flight to San Francisco which was due to leave in the evening! Good job we like flying! So instead of an hour flight from Nelson to Auckland, we were to take all day, just to get to Auckland International.

Nelson airport was tiny...it made Eastleigh seem like Heathrow. It didn't take long to check in, but we were rather concerned to find out that all the earlier flights to Christchurch had been cancelled or diverted due to fog! OK so I was quite happy to stay longer in NZ really, but I was still relieved when we found out that our flight was going to leave on time.

Saying goodbye to Val and Rich was so upsetting and I was still crying while we waited on the tarmac to take off. As it happens, we had one person too many on the plane and it then took the staff half an hour to work out who it was and how he had got on the flight!. It was a tiny plane anyway and I was quite nervous taking off. But this ended up being one of the best flights of the journey. We flew quite low all the way to Christchurch and the views over the mountains were fantastic.

It only took just over half an hour to get to Christchurch, so that was the first leg of the journey done....3 more flights to go and no bed and it was still 28th August.
